Position: Lab Technician
Team structure
This post is based at the Microbiology Laboratory of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU). MORU is a collaboration between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, principally funded by the Wellcome Trust. It’s objectives are to conduct research in tropical diseases with the aim of supporting the identification and treatment of these diseases in Thailand and other countries. The Bangkok Unit laboratories provide a scientific and logistical base for microbiology, molecular biology, and immunological diagnostics.
Tasks
Responsibilities are to support diagnostic development of Scrub typhus, Rickettsioses, and other vector-borne diseases by performing diagnostic assays in immunology, biochemistry, and molecular biology within the group of Prof Stuart Blacksell. Techniques may include but not be limited to serological assay (such as ELISA, IFA, and multiplex Luminex assay), real-time PCR, and cell culture. The post-holder is expected to follow SOPs, strictly keep good laboratory records, able to compile data into presentation, and maintain consumable inventory.
Essential Criterion
• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related field
• Minimum of 1-year hands-on experience in medical research environment
• Good command of written and spoken English and Thai
• Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
• Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment
• High attention to details and accuracy
• Reliable team player with a proactive attitude
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Strong time management and organizational skills
• Proficient in MS Office applications (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
Desirable Criterion
• Prior experience in immunological assays and molecular biology techniques

The post is based in Bangkok at the Mahidol Oxford Research unit (https://www.tropmedres.ac/).
The salary will be based on MORU scales and will depend on experience and qualifications.
The salary package includes:
• 13th months of salary

Our main research interests are the epidemiology, diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment of malaria, scrub typhus, melioidosis, leptospirosis and other tropical infections which impose a substantial disease burden on rural populations throughout this populous region.
