Since the 1990s, when computers became part of our day-to-day lives both at home and at work, IT jobs have been in fairly consistent high demand. Almost every aspect of office operations, from HR to Finance to Marketing to Manufacturing, relies heavily on IT expertise. And don’t think for a moment that the need for IT is limited to these aspects of operations. The possibilities are practically limitless. Even those in seemingly unrelated professions like automotive, law enforcement, electrical as well as oil and gas jobs need computers to maximize their efficiencies.

On top of all the demands from the various industries, there is also the demand from the private sector, for quick reliable connection to the internet, and software applications that help people manage their day-to-day lives.

If you’re looking at a career in IT, you’ll be glad to know that this is virtually a can’t-miss proposition. When you’re a trained IT expert, there’s sure to be a job waiting for you out there. And it certainly helps a lot that you’re in the country that’s acknowledged as the world’s IT capital. That’s right, Singapore is the hub of IT activity worldwide, being one of the world’s leading suppliers of IT systems.

Firstly identify which aspect of IT you’d like to specialize inand find out which one is best for you. There are three types of professions in information technology which you could be interested in:

Technical professionalsare the ones who are most directly involved with the development or use of products such as computer peripherals and software. If you specialize in hardware engineering, network engineering, or programming, you’re a prime candidate for a job as a technical professional. The job description of a technical professional will place you in high demand, as your skills will be needed by a wide variety of industries. Finance, education, administration and logistics industry are in constant need of technical professionals’ expertise.

Sales Professionalsare the ones who are in charge of selling hardware and software developed by the technical professionals. This is not your typical salesman’s job. If you want to become an IT sales professional, you will have to know everything about the products you’re selling. This includes how to operate these, how these can be applied within a company’s system, and how these should be maintained. You have to be able to convince your customers that the products you’re offering are essential to their business. Target big-name companies and institutions, and you’ll have a strong client base that you’ll be able to sell to on a consistent basis.

information-technology Support Professionalsprovide the after-sales support needed after the sales professional has sealed the deal. If this is your type of job, this will entail taking calls from companies who bought your product, and dealing with them when they have problems with your software or hardware. You’ll have to be an expert troubleshooter, and you’ll have to be able to determine if a problem can be fixed via simple over-the-phone instructions or a visit to the client’s office. Because you’ll be dealing with customers, you’ll have to have both good technology skills and people skills.

There’s no doubt that being an IT professional is one of the most exciting, most dynamic careers you can pursue. It’s constantly evolving, and you could make solid contributions to the profession with breakthrough innovations.
