How to Get Out of a Sales Slump

Everyone who is in sales, at one time or another during their career, will experience what is called a "sales slump". What exactly is a sales slump? A sales slump is a dip or drop in your sales which, if you have not planned ahead of time for them, will cause a strain on your income.

Now that you are aware that they exist, they will not come as a surprise to you. The good news is that if you plan ahead, you can breeze right through it -- avoiding a sales slump before it even happens and possibly even use the slow time to take a little time off.

A sales slump can occur for a several different reasons, but the most common reasons for them are:

  • Inventory shortages
  • Economic recessions
  • Seasonal selling
  • Self-induced

All of the reasons listed above are pretty much out of your control except for when a sales slump is self-induced. Does this sound strange that you would cause your own lack of income? Well, perhaps it does but it is as common as grass amongst sales people.

How to Get Out of a Sales Slump: Back to Basics Will Remedy the Self-Induced Sales Slump

The self-induced sales slump can be remedied rather quickly. Usually the reason for the self-induced sales slump is caused from carelessness and lack of attention to following all the steps in the sales process. It doesn't matter how long or how great you are in sales. If you start to skip steps in the sales process or trim out a few things here and there at any stage of the sales process, you will eventually start to notice that your sales are down.

Never think you can skip steps once you have a successful presentation down pat. The words and phrases you have put together all fit together like a hand in a glove to successfully close sales.

Breeze Through a Sales Slump with a Simple Budget PlanAlso, lack of attention to building your pipeline can also cause a dip in sales. Keeping your pipeline full and up to date is an excellent slump preventative.

Always remember that if you are experiencing a sales slump and you have eliminated the first three most common causes, take a close and careful look at what you may have changed in your presentation. Get back to basics and your sales performance will soon be back on track again.

Breeze Through a Sales Slump with a Simple Budget Plan

So what is the best way to overcome the sales slump for the other three reasons? The only way is to set aside some time and put together a detailed and workable budget for yourself. Discipline yourself and your family to stick to it and you will easily survive a sales slump.

It happens so often that when business is good and sales are high our spending habits go up accordingly. This is a bad habit to get into. Make the effort to follow your budget and set aside that money instead of spending it. This will give you a nice cushion that you can rely upon when sales drop off.
